Daylight Design Strategies for Optimized Conference Experiences
Abstract
Conference centers welcome global gatherings but also face challenges experientially connecting vast interior spaces. As attendance grows, innovative design strategies are needed. This paper examines how judiciously incorporating daylighting techniques can enhance user experiences within international conference complexes based on an extensive review of scholarly literature. The substantial psychological, physiological and performance benefits of natural light exposure for occupants are established. Daylight strategically introduced through atria, edge lighting and windows with views is shown to uplift spatial qualities and openness within large volumes. Transparent connections and luminous landmarks aided navigation through daylight-lit interiors and complexes. Naturally-lit, flexible multipurpose rooms and reconfigurable daylit zones supported diverse programming adaptations. Monitoring ensured consistent lighting quality. Daylighting aligned with sustainability initiatives by decreasing energy loads through electric lighting and cooling reductions. Computer models optimized daylight harvesting controls. Findings demonstrate daylight's potential for experience optimization regarding spatial experience, wayfinding connectivity, programming flexibility and sustainable operations when thoughtfully incorporated guided by research. Specific techniques and their quantified impacts on experience and building performance warrant further study. Overall, this paper underscores judicious daylight design as a promising strategy for enhanced user experiences in international conference centers.
