Microbial Contamination of Ifiayoung Idu River Bank, Idu Uruan Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study was carried out to investigate the microbial contamination at the Ifiayoung Idu River bank using standard microbiological techniques. The water samples of (cfu/ml) showed that the total fungal counts encountered were (1.6×105) and total bacterial counts isolated were (0.7×105). The microbial contaminants encountered included four bacterial genera, which were Pseudomonas sp. Shigella sp. Bacillus sp. and Streptococcus sp., and two fungal genera, Candida sp and Rhizopus sp. The most encountered were Shigella sp (62.5%) and Candida sp. (71.4%), while the least encountered were Streptococcus sp. (6.25%) and Rhizopus sp (28.6%). The study revealed a high level of microbial contamination at the riverbank of Ifiayoung Idu. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness among residents of the area on the harmful health effects of their activities at the riverbank and also seek possible ways of mitigation.
