Integrating Therapeutic Design Principles for A Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Center in Bayelsa State

Abstract

The architecture of drug addiction rehabilitation facilities had evolved from sterile, institutional structures into holistic therapeutic environments intended to support physical, emotional, and psychological recovery. This study examined therapeutic design approaches relevant to the development of a proposed Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Center in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Drawing on global and regional case studies, environmental analysis, and established behavioral-health design theories, the research identified architectural elements that fostered safety, dignity, autonomy, and healing. The proposed conceptual framework of a healing enclosure with courtyards was guided by principles of adaptive architecture, biophilic design, trauma-informed design, and climatic responsiveness. By integrating nature, structured spatial progression, passive environmental strategies, and local cultural considerations, the study provided a blueprint for designing context-sensitive rehabilitation centers in the Niger Delta. The paper concluded with findings that underscored the importance of therapeutic spaces in addiction recovery and presented recommendations for architectural practice in emerging economies.
