Impact of Practical-Based Project Teaching Techniques on Students’ Performance in Welding and Fabrication in Government Technical Colleges in Rivers State
Abstract
The study examined the Impact of Practical-Based Project Teaching Technique on Students’ Performance in welding and Fabrication in Government Technical Colleges in Rivers State. Specifically, it examined the impact of marking out, cutting and forming of sheet metals techniques on students’ performance in welding and fabrication skill acquisition and students personal career development in the society. One research question and hypothesis guided the study, which adopted Quasi-experimental design. The population comprised VOC II welding and fabrication students of which census sample of 62 respondents (50 male and 12 female) was drawn. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire titled Practical-Base Project Teaching Technique Welding Fabrication Student Performance Test Instrument (PPTTWFSPTI), with a reliability coefficient of 0.65 and a structured test. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer research questions while ANCOVA was applied to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Statistical Package for Social Sciences was the reliability and demographic analysis.” It was found that the “Practical-Based Project Teaching Technique is effective in skill teaching performance in Marking out, Cutting, Forming of Sheet Metal. The study recommends that Welding and Fabrication Teachers should subject this newly developed Teaching manual used for the experimental group to further try-out in order to serve as means of further assuring its performance usefulness, and eventual adoption for continual use in teaching performance skills in welding and fabrication and since standardization and harmonization of programs are part of the responsibilities of National Board for Technical Education . They should consider introducing practical-Base project teaching technique experimental study manual as a standardized guide for the implementation of a uniform instructional strategy in welding and fabrication in Government Technical Colleges.
