Design of A Mixed-Use Facility for Sustainable Energy Conservation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State
Abstract
In order to create a mixed-use facility that combines residential, commercial, and recreational uses into a single complex, this thesis explores sustainable energy conservation techniques. The study highlights how crucial it is to lessen environmental impact through the use of energy-efficient technologies, the integration of renewable energy sources, water recycling, and efficient waste management. The recycling symbol, which stands for continuity, renewal, and closed-loop sustainability—where resources are managed in a regenerative cycle—inspired the design concept. Key architectural strategies for attaining energy efficiency and functional synergy in dense urban contexts are identified by the research through qualitative analysis and case studies of exemplary projects like Kumru Ankara , Eastgate Centre (Zimbabwe), Linked Hybrid , Nestoil Tower, and Kingsway Tower (Nigeria). The suggested design shows how to combine passive and active technologies, like rainwater collection, greywater recycling, and solar and wind energy generation, to maximise building performance. Finally, by fusing energy conservation, human comfort, and environmental responsibility through creative architectural design, this study advances knowledge of how mixed-use complexes might promote sustainable urban expansion in Nigeria.
