Computerized Employee Clocking System Using Biometric Authentication for Enhanced Workforce Accountability in Nigerian Organizations

Abstract

Many organizations still rely on traditional attendance methods such as manual signing sheets and punch cards; however, these approaches are susceptible to errors, impersonation, time theft, and overall inefficiency. This project seeks to develop a secure and reliable application that automates the recording, monitoring, and reporting of employee attendance. The aim of this study is to design and implement a computerized clocking system that employs biometric fingerprint recognition to verify employee identities and eliminate fraudulent practices such as “buddy punching.” The motivation for this research stems from the inaccurate and inconsistent attendance records, difficulty in identifying cases of lateness or absenteeism, time-consuming record-keeping and report generation risk of data loss, and difficulty integrating attendance data into payroll processing. The methodology adopted includes system analysis, system design, and implementation using Java programming language and MySQL for backend data storage. The system development follows the Software Development Life Cycle model, with the integration of fingerprint biometric hardware for user authentication. Pseudo-code and data flow diagrams are utilized to illustrate the logical workflow of the system. The expected outcome of the research is a fully functional biometric clocking system capable of accurately capturing, storing, and retrieving employee attendance records. When implemented, the system should significantly reduce time-related discrepancies, improve administrative efficiency, boost organizational productivity, and ultimately strengthen overall workforce accountability.
