Abstract

Objective: The study ascertained coping strategies to challenges affecting aquacultural production in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Place and Duration: The study was conducted in the rural areas of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria from 2025-2026. Sample and Method: A questionnaire, with items covering the specific objectives of the study, was administered to 270 rural fish farmers using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Results: Results of data analyzed using descriptive statistics and factor analysis indicate that 70.0% of the fish farmers were males , 47.8% were married, 81.1% had formal education, 40.0% were engaged in commercial type of fish farming and their average year of fish farming was 11 years. Findings further reveal that environmental and technical challenges were the most severe challenges affecting aquacultural production in the study area. Factor analysis result reveal that active participation in training and extension services to update knowledge in aquacultural production and adopting effective disease and management practices are statistically significant strategies adopted by the respondents to cope with the challenges affecting their aquacultural activities. Recommendation: It is recommended, among others, that Governmental and Non-Governmental agencies in the State should embark on more effective training/enlightenment programmes on fish farming and extension services activities targeted at rural aquaculture farmers in the State.
