Abstract

Objective: The study assessed complementary feeding practices of mothers of infants aged 6–24 months in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Research Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study design. Place and Duration: The study was conducted in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria from 2023–2024. Methods: A semi-structured questionnaire with items covering the specific objectives was used to elicit data from 927 mothers of infants aged 6–24 months using a multi-stage sampling technique. Results: Results of the data, analyzed using univariate analysis, reveal that majority of the mothers had good knowledge of complementary feeding. The Minimum Meal Frequency, Minimum Meal Diversity and Minimum Acceptable Diet were met by 85.8%, 57.6% and 31.7% of the children respectively. Majority of the children had normal HAZ, WAZ and MUACZ while 68.2% were at risk of wasting with respect to WHz. Recommendation: It is recommended that efforts should be made by both Governmental and Non- Governmental agencies to improve the household income in the study area to enable mothers in those households meet the Minimum Acceptable Diet criterion for children under 24 months of age.
