Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive village design proposal for Banda Village in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. The study was undertaken to assess existing physical, socio-economic, environmental, and infrastructural conditions in the community, identify development challenges, and prepare a sustainable layout that supports improved living standards and orderly rural growth. The methodology integrated field surveys, stakeholder consultations, land use mapping, and geospatial analysis using the provided coordinate data. Findings revealed that Banda is a culturally cohesive settlement with a population of over 3,000 people, dominated by agriculture and fishing, but constrained by poor infrastructure, unstructured layouts, limited social services, erosion challenges, and underutilized open spaces. Existing land use shows that open spaces occupy 54 percent of the total land area, while residential use covers 31 percent, indicating significant potential for land optimization. Guided by sustainability principles, the proposed village design introduces a structured zoning system that includes organized residential blocks, enlarged institutional and public facilities, improved circulation networks, commercial nodes, agricultural zones, security installations, and environmental protection areas. A three-phase implementation strategy is provided, focusing on foundational infrastructure, development of core public facilities, and long-term urbanization of the rural settlement. The plan emphasizes community participation, cultural preservation, renewable energy adoption, and economic empowerment through agro-processing and rural enterprise development. If fully implemented, the Banda Village Design Plan will transform the community into a functional, accessible, and resilient rural settlement that supports socio- economic growth and enhances overall quality of life.
