Abstract

Fish act as continuous, living samplers, providing a time-integrated measure of contaminant exposure that water samples alone cannot offer. The study aims to assess and compare pollutants bioaccumulation in fish species from different river systems impacted by crude oil. The study was carried out using standard methods like field sampling for fish collection using the gill nets and water sampling for pollutants (Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Hg, PAHs, and TPH); laboratory analysis of pollutants. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) fish were collected comprising forty (40) each of Tilapia (Tilapia guinensis), Catfish (Clarias sp.), and Mullet (lisagrandisquamis). The study integrated biomarkers (Glutathione reductase, Glutathione peroxide, Superoxide dismutase, Melondialdehyde) to strengthen the assessment in conjunction with chemical analysis. Analysis of variance statistical tool was used to test the significance of the results. The results revealed that heavy metals range as follows: Pb (0.633±0.025 to 1.343±0.169mg/kg) in T. guinensis and lisagrandisquamis; Cd (0.123±0.007 to 0.251±0.026mg/kg) in mullet and tilapia respectively; Cr (0.001±0.000 to
