The Impact of Using Multimedia in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics on Students’ Academic Achievement in Secondary Schools in Okene, Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the impact of using multimedia in the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised senior secondary school students in public secondary schools in the study area, from which a sample of one hundred (100) students was randomly selected. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and a mathematics achievement test. Descriptive statistics were used to answer the research questions, while an independent samples t-test was employed to test the null hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that multimedia-based instruction significantly improved students’ academic achievement in mathematics compared with the conventional teaching method. The results also showed that multimedia instruction enhanced students’ motivation and attitudes towards mathematics, although challenges such as inadequate ICT facilities, limited teacher competence, and high cost of multimedia resources were identified. The study concluded that multimedia-based instruction is an effective strategy for improving mathematics teaching and learning in secondary schools and recommended increased provision of ICT facilities and teacher training to enhance its effective implementation.
