The Devastating Impact of Carbon Emissions on Environmental Development: A Review of Evidence from the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria

Abstract

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria, a hub of oil and gas production, is grappling with the severe environmental consequences of carbon emissions. This paper reviews the evidence on the impact of carbon emissions on environmental development in the region, highlighting the pressing need for sustainable practices and mitigation strategies. We examine the existing literature on carbon emissions, deforestation, and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta, and discuss the implications for human health, biodiversity, and economic development. Our analysis reveals alarming levels of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily driven by gas flaring, oil spills, and deforestation, which have devastating effects on the region's ecosystem and human well-being. This review underscores the urgent need for policy interventions, technological innovations, and community engagement to mitigate the environmental impacts of carbon emissions and promote sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
