Faith-Based Organisations and the Role of Communication in Socio-Spiritual Development of Fisher Foundation in Rivers State

Ndee-ue, Baridura, Prof. Nsereka B.G, Ogedi, Nyekwere PhD

Abstract

This study investigates the communication strategies employed by The Soul Fisher Foundation to promote socio-spiritual development in Rivers State, Nigeria. Guided by two objectives, the research examined TSFF’s communication methods, assessed awareness levels among beneficiaries and volunteers. The study is anchored on Social Responsibility Theory and Development Communication Theory, which emphasize ethical communication and its role in societal transformation. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, integrating quantitative data from 353 beneficiaries and qualitative insights from 30 volunteers. Quantitative data were analysed using weighted mean scores, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative responses. Findings revealed that TSFF utilizes a multi- channel communication approach including radio, social media, print materials, and direct outreach tailored to local cultural and spiritual values. Awareness of TSFF’s objectives was high among participants, with many reporting personal and communal transformation. However, gaps in outreach persist in remote communities due to limited media access and cultural resistance. The study concludes that TSFF’s communication efforts have positively influenced spiritual growth, moral reorientation, and community engagement. To enhance impact, recommendations include expanding media engagement, strengthening partnerships, and integrating culturally sensitive storytelling. Faith-based organizations like TSFF hold significant potential in fostering inclusive development when supported by strategic communication and institutional collaboration.
