Remuneration of Police Personnel and Insecurity in Nigeria: A Study of Rivers State Police Command

Nwankpa, Clare Ifeyinwa, PhD.

Abstract

The study investigated the remuneration of police personnel and insecurity in Nigeria with emphasis on Rivers State Police Command. Rivers State has experienced different forms of insecurity such as cultism and kidnapping among others. The state is volatile to insecurity; the volatility is due to the myriads of insecurity that plague the state (kidnapping and cultism etc.). The objectives of the study are to; examine the impact of poor wages of Nigerian Police Personnel on the fight against cultism and kidnapping in River State; and to analyse the efforts of the Rivers State government in combating insecurity in the state. The system theory was adopted as the theoretical framework. Primary and secondary sources of data were utilized for the study. The primary source of data involves the use of questionnaires while the secondary source involves the collection of information from textbooks, journals, conference papers etc. The study finds out that the Nigerian Police Force is poorly funded and this has affected the capability of personnel of the force to combat insecurity, especially in Rivers State. The work recommends that the Federal government of Nigeria should review the salary and remuneration of the men and Officers of the Nigeria Police upward to be at par with those of other countries in the West and some other African countries. This would serve as a source of motivation for personnel in the discharge of their duties.
