Designing A Sustainable Cloud Efficiency Model for Reducing Carbon Footprint in Large-Scale IT Operations

Taiwo Oyewole, Odunayo Mercy Babatope, Winner Mayo, David Adedayo, Akokodaripon

Abstract

The exponential growth of cloud computing has transformed global IT infrastructure, but it has also led to escalating energy consumption and carbon emissions. This review explores the development of a sustainable cloud efficiency model aimed at minimizing the carbon footprint of large-scale IT operations while maintaining computational performance and reliability. It examines the intersection of cloud architecture, data center optimization, renewable energy integration, and intelligent workload management. Key focus areas include energy-efficient virtualization, dynamic resource provisioning, AI-driven predictive analytics for power usage optimization, and carbon-aware scheduling strategies. The study also evaluates the role of sustainability metrics such as Power Usage Effectiveness , Carbon Usage Effectiveness , and Water Usage Effectiveness in assessing environmental performance. Furthermore, emerging green computing paradigms, including edge-cloud synergy and circular hardware lifecycle management, are reviewed as integral components of sustainable digital transformation. By synthesizing recent advancements in carbon-efficient data center design and policy frameworks supporting green ICT, this paper proposes a comprehensive model that aligns operational efficiency with environmental responsibility. The findings underscore the potential of intelligent sustainability-driven architectures to achieve net-zero carbon objectives and promote responsible cloud innovation for the digital economy.
