Design of Gas Pipeline Leakage Avoidance System for Steady Gas Supply to Power Stations in Nigeria
Abstract
This work would ensure the timely response of gas suppliers to issues of pipeline vandalisms and pipeline failure due to corrosion which are responsible for the frequent power failures in Nigeria since 85% of power stations in Nigeria are powered by natural gas. In this project, each of the gas pipelines that conveys natural gas from one gas station to a power station is named. This project would help to ensure that vandals are arrested before they vandalize the pipeline and also ensure that pipeline failure due to corrosion is also eliminated since it will report the quality of the pipeline based on impedance mismatching associated with corrosion. Each of the gas pipelines has a source connected to a gas company and destination connected to a power station. The gas station has a database which contains date of reporting, time of reporting, number of incidences, etc. Hence, this project is designed in such a way that a gas company supplies gas to many power stations using different pipelines. During operation, each of the pipelines conveys gas from the gas company to the different power stations. Each pipeline connects to the gas company via the source stations. The source flow station which has a microcontroller as the central control unit with time domain reflectometer , Pump and sound alarm as output devices. It also has Flow meter and start button as the input devices with mobile phone that serves as the modem. Each power station (Destination station) has the arrangement as source flow station except that it has sound alarm as the only output device. During operation, the source flow station of each pipeline starts its pump and pumps gas to the respective power stations. The source flow station also activates the time domain reflectometer which sends pulses along the conducting length of the pipeline to check for impedance mismatching possibly due to tampering by vandals or as a result of corrosion which starts from the outside of the pipeline to the inside.
