Comparative Study of the Growth and Yield of Maize Subjected to Side-Dressing and Ring Methods of Fertilizer Application

Abstract

This experimental trial focused on estimating the effects of ring and side dressing methods of fertilizer application on the growth and yield of maize during the production year of 2022 with the aim of determining the best method between the two for the production of maize. In order to achieve this objective, the experiment was laid out in a Complete Randomized Design with three treatments which were replicated six times. The data were collected on the growth and yield parameters. The calculated F-values of hypotheses 1 and 2 (3.97 and 39.64 respectively) were greater than the critical F-value (2.62), which means that treatment differ significantly. The results of the analysis were further validated by the computation of critical difference (CD). The CD values of hypotheses 1 and 2 were 3.8 and 2.34 respectively which were less than the difference that exist among treatments. Hence, all the null hypotheses were rejected at 5 % level of significance and concluded with 95 % confidence that maize crops that were produced by applying fertilizer in rings had the highest yield when compared to the ones produced by side-dressing method as well as that of maize plots. Based on these findings, it was recommended that farmers should apply fertilizer in a ring form to maize crops.
