An Administrative Law and the Fading Voice: The Demise of the Ombudsman in Nigeria: A Study of Delta and Rivers States

Abstract

The institution of the ombudsman, established to address administrative injustices and promote good governance, has been facing significant challenges in Nigeria particularly in Delta and River States. This study examines the decline of the ombudsman’s effectiveness in addressing administrative grievances and its implications on citizens right. The research investigates the factors contributing to the erosion of the ombudsman’s authority, including political interference, inadequate resources and lack of autonomy through a comparative analysis of Delta and Rivers States, this study highlight the consequences of a weakened ombudsman institution, including unchecked administrative abuses and diminished citizens trust in government. The findings of the study have significant implications for administrative law and governance in Nigeria emphasizing the need to strengthen the ombudsman institution to promote accountability and protect citizen’s rights.
