Europe 2020 Strategy and the Role of European Union (EU) Institution in Formulating and Implementing Asylum and Migration Policies

Abstract

This paper examines the 2020 strategy formulated by the European Union in dealing with asylum seekers and migrants’ generally. Through the qualitative-descriptive approach with data, mostly from secondary and tertiary sources the paper interrogates the European Union’s policies with respect to immigration, which was devised to enable the European states that formed the union to bridge the gap in their various areas of employment need. It also examines the critical role played by the European Union’s institutions in the formulation and implementation of asylum and immigration policies in the union. The paper finds that the Europe 2020 strategy was centred at supporting asylum seekers and immigrants in their quest for the best suitable migrant labour for the employment need of the Europeans states. The paper argued that the 2020 strategy was not all encompassing in the sense that it did not take care of the challenges of the irregular migrants because the European Union did not develop a policy for solving the problems of irregular migration from the sending countries.
