Abstract

This study investigated pesticide residue levels in four vegetables (Pumpkin, okro, bitter leaf, pepper) in Obi, Ogbadibo and Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. The pesticide residue levels were determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Data obtained were statistically analysed using SPSS and were compared with FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius limits. The results showed that, the detected concentrations of the organochlorines namely ?-LINDANE, ?, ? and ?-lindane, PP-DDT, methaxychlor, dieldrin, aldrin, endosulphan I and II are all below the FAO MRL of between 0.01-0.1mg/kg, while the organophosphates notably; durstan, dichlorvos were above the set MRLs. There no Significant differences (P=0.05) in the concentrations of both the organochlorines and organophosphates. The PTI values exceeded the standard value of 1 for the organophosphates while they were below 1 for the organochlorines. This indicates that long-term consumption of these vegetables, containing various pesticide residues, may pose a chronic health risk to humans. While most pesticides had a relatively lower risk of adverse health effects in organochlorines, the elevated PTI values organophosphates in all four vegetable types indicate a potential chronic health risk associated with the long-term consumption of these contaminated vegetables. Continuous monitoring to maintain the safety and quality of vegetables in the local markets is required.
