Impact of Teachers’ Educational Qualification and Experience on Academic Performance of Public Secondary School Students in Nasarawa State, Nigeria
Abstract
This research work investigated impact of teachers’ educational qualification and experience on academic performance of public secondary school students in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The aim is to find out the educational qualification and experience of public secondary school teachers in the state. This is because there is a general believe that majority of the teachers lack the basic skills and techniques for effective teaching. The assumption is that teachers who possess educational qualification and experience are capable of teaching proficiently. Among the various public secondary schools, the researcher choose Nasarawa State as a case study to the research work and the outcome can be generalized. The study is a survey research. Target population of the study was 384 participants. This comprised 268 teachers and 116 principals of some sampled public secondary schools in Nasarawa State. The sample of the study was 195 respondents. The sample was drawn using Taro Yamane’s technique. Instrument for data collection was the researcher-developed questionnaire. The instrument has 28 items using likert modified response option of Strongly Agree (SA) Agreed (A) Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD). Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The two null hypotheses formulated were tested using regression analysis and the associated ANOVA. Findings of the study showed that most of the public secondary school teachers lack the requisite educational qualification and experience to enable them teach students and improve their E-ISSN 2504-883X P-ISSN 2695 2432 academic performance. The recommendation was that recruitment of teachers should be based on educational qualification and experience.
