Exploring Counselling Strategies for Behaviour Modification of Public Secondary School Students in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State
Abstract
This study investigated counselling strategies of school counsellors for behaviour modification of public secondary school students in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, Nigeria. Four research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted survey research design. Target population of the study was 254 school counsellors in Wukari Local Government Area, sample of the study was 155 respondents. The sample size was obtained using Taro Yamane's technique for sample size determination. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, the research questions were answered using item-by-item percentage statistical analysis. The null hypotheses formulated were tested at 0.05 level of significance using regression analysis and the associated ANOVA. Findings of the study were that, despite the usefulness of counselling strategies of school counsellors in modifying behaviours of students, it is not being employed in the schools. That leads to an increase in violent behaviour of the students in most schools. It was recommended that school guidance counsellors should intensify efforts toward the use of the counselling strategies in order to curb the aberrant behaviours for effective teaching and learning to realization of goals and aspirations of education.
