Abstract

Mixed-ability mathematics classrooms present persistent challenges for educators, including wide variations in prior knowledge, learning pace, cognitive readiness, and motivational levels. Traditional uniform instructional approaches often fail to address these differences, resulting in uneven learning outcomes and achievement gaps. This review paper examines the effectiveness of the Differentiated Instruction (DI) model in improving mixed mathematics outcomes through targeted grouping, formative feedback, and intentional instructional planning. Drawing on contemporary empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and classroom-based interventions, the paper synthesizes evidence on how flexible grouping strategies, data-informed feedback mechanisms, and structured lesson planning enhance mathematical understanding and learner engagement across diverse student populations. Particular emphasis is placed on instructional alignment with learner readiness, interest, and learning profiles, as well as the role of continuous assessment in guiding instructional adjustments. The review also explores teacher decision-making processes, curriculum adaptation techniques, and the integration of instructional technologies that support differentiation in mathematics education. Findings indicate that when systematically implemented, differentiated instruction leads to measurable improvements in conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and learner confidence, while reducing performance disparities within mixed-ability classrooms. The paper concludes by identifying implementation challenges, professional development needs, and future research directions necessary for scaling differentiated instruction practices in mathematics education. Overall, the study contributes a structured synthesis of evidence supporting differentiated instruction as a pedagogically robust approach for achieving equitable and improved mathematics learning outcomes.
