The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Library Services for Teaching and Learning in Nigerian Colleges of Education
Abstract
This study examines the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing library services to support teaching and learning in Nigerian Colleges of Education. Libraries remain vital to the educational process, yet the adoption of AI technologies in these institutions is still limited. The research seeks to bridge a significant gap in existing literature by exploring how AI is being integrated into library operations. Using a mixed-method approach involving surveys and interviews with librarians, lecturers, and IT personnel from four selected colleges, the study investigates the current level of AI adoption, user awareness, perceptions, and institutional strategies for implementation. The findings reveal that while awareness of AI’s potential is growing among library professionals, practical adoption is constrained by inadequate infrastructure, insufficient technical training, and weak policy frameworks. Nevertheless, respondents recognise that AI can significantly improve library efficiency through automated cataloguing, enhanced information retrieval, plagiarism detection, and personalised learning support. The study concludes that with strategic investments, consistent staff training, and the development of robust institutional policies, AI can transform library services. Such advancements will not only streamline operations but also promote innovation, improve access to knowledge, and strengthen teaching and learning outcomes across Nigeria’s Colleges of Education.
