The Impact of Non-Governmental Organizations on the Socio- Economic Status of Women in Rural Communities in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, Nigeria

Abstract

The most critical and vital organization of people that have special interest in a particular aspect of community or social life of people is non-governmental organizations. This is because there is a general notion that they are organizations that identifies particular community needs and mobilizes like-minded people to give expression to their concerns. Their main focus is women in the rural communities who are marginalized, deprived and less privileged in terms of socioeconomic status. This study “impact of non-governmental organizations on socioeconomic status of women in rural communities in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba state, Nigeria” investigates the impact which non-governmental organizations has on socioeconomic status of rural women in small traditional communities. The study is a correlational survey research design. Target population of the study was 869 participants. Sample of the study was 275 respondents. The sample size was determined using Slovins’ technique for sample size determination. Instrument for data collection was the researcher structured questionnaire and interviews; four research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics specifically; the research questions were answered using item and item percentage statistical analysis. The null hypotheses formulated were tested at 0.05 level of significance using regression analysis and the associated ANOVA. Findings of the study revealed that many of the rural women have not improved in their socioeconomic status. That there is high rate of poverty among the women, occasioned by lack of access to socioeconomic activities. It was recommended that non-governmental organizations should increase their effort towards improving socioeconomic status of the rural women.
