Phytochemical, Proximate, Vitamin and Mineral Composition of Neem Seed (Azadirachta Indica ) from Maiha Road Mubi South LGA Adamawa State, Nigeria

Abstract

Azadirachta indica which is commonly known as neem plant has one of the most promising medicinal properties having a wide spectrum of biological activity. Fresh matured leaves, stem- bark and seeds of A. indica were collected, air dried and ethanol-extract was used to screen for some active chemical constituents. Phytochemicals of neem plant parts were extracted and screened both qualitatively and quantitatively. Among the qualitative tests done for the presence of secondary metabolites; were all present in all of the tested parts. Ethanol as extraction solvent standard analytical methods were used to determine the phytochemical content of phenolic which is the highest 71.00+0.01 while flavonoid is the 28.21+0.01their proximate compositions were determined by methods described by A.O.C.A and their heavy metal contamination were determined using Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer . The study reveal the amount of Vitamins (vitamin C 71.22+0.03 and vitamin A 61.70+0.02) ingredients of the tree which can be used to minimize chemically induced liver damage by stabilizing level of serum enzymes and boosting level of antioxidants like those found in vitamin A, E and natural carotenoids, which neutralize free radicals and prevent liver damage. The result from this study reveals that the plant can be used for medicinal purposes as its heavy metal composition falls within acceptable level recommended by WHO.
