Network Analysis of Public Bus Transportation in Durban: A Spatial Approach

Abstract

Africa is a developing continent that needs to improve its land use and development. It is not to undermine some of its cities in Africa that are planned and established. The objective of this study is to apply a spatial approach using data derived from Remote Sensing and GIS as a tool to perform spatial network analysis of Durban. The methodology reveals how data was acquired, processed, and manipulated, and presented in digital form as figures and maps for decision-making. The results reveal distances ranging from 500m to 150000m, as shown in the legends, which implies the distances that are required to reach the bus stops, as shown in the spatial network analysis. The critical findings indicate that, from the network analysis performed, some areas are very accessible, which promotes transportation accessibility. The dense routes and facilities (Bus stops) found within the central business districts neighbourhood area of Durban affirm to it. Furthermore, the use of spatial data derived from Remote Sensing was used in GIS to analyze public bus transportation. The sparse routes and facilities (Bus stops) in the boundary areas and outside the sketch of Durban show limited accessibility. The study shows that some areas still experience challenges to get to the cities. It supports the boundaries with other municipalities have about 92% of landmass areas with limited Public Bus transportation network access.
