Knowledge and Attitude of Nurses Towards HIV-Positive Pregnant Women in Ika Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria
Abstract
Pregnant women living with HIV require comprehensive healthcare due to increased vulnerability to opportunistic infections. This study evaluated knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward HIV-positive pregnant women in six state hospitals in Ika Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design involved 214 nurses surveyed using structured questionnaires. Results showed 81% demonstrated high knowledge, 13% moderate knowledge, and 6% poor knowledge. Regarding attitudes, 91.5% exhibited positive attitudes while 8.5% held negative attitudes. Chi-square analysis revealed no significant associations between attitude and age (p=0.139), knowledge and marital status (p=0.079), or attitude and years of experience (p=0.211). The findings indicate adequate knowledge and positive attitudes among nurses, essential for effective prevention of mother-to-child transmission programs. However, targeted interventions addressing remaining knowledge gaps and negative attitudes among minorities are recommended to optimize care quality.
