Groundwater Exploitation and Domestic Water Supply Challenges in Yenagoa Metropolis

Abstract

The quantity of water derivable from groundwater could be affected by overexploitation, which also promotes negative impact on the quality. This study investigated groundwater exploitation, treatment methods, and domestic water supply challenges in Yenagoa metropolis, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. A survey of 350 households was conducted to assess sources of water, facility ownership, treatment practices, maintenance frequency, and supply-related challenges. Results showed an overwhelming reliance on groundwater (95.4%), primarily managed by landlords (67.7%), with filtration (42.9%) being the most common treatment method. Maintenance of water facilities was irregular, and households faced issues such as pipe blockages, discoloration, and staining of utensils. The study concluded that while groundwater was the main domestic water source, effective treatment, regular maintenance, and improved management strategies were crucial to ensure sustainable and safe water supply for residents of Yenagoa.
