Modeling the Mechanical Properties of Concrete Produced with Ngolo ( Rapana venosa ) Shells
Abstract
The study examined the use of Ngolo (Rapana venosa) shell in place of granite in the production of concrete. These shells are available in large quantity as domestic wastes in the Niger Delta region. Tests carried out include; sieve analysis of aggregates, workability tests, density, compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength. The test samples are 150mm cubes, 500mm x 100mm x 100mm beams and 200mm x 100mm cylinders with a mix ratio of 1:2:4, and demolded after 24hrs. The percentage replacement with Rapana venosa shells include; 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 100%. A total number of 63 cubes, beams and cylinders were casted and cured for 28 days while the strength properties of the concrete were established at 7, 14 and 28 days respectively. Generally, the level of workability of the concrete is suitable for medium concrete applications like beams, slabs, and foundation laying, meeting the necessary criteria for these structures. The results of the strength properties of the concrete increased as the curing age of the concrete progressed whereas a decrease in strength was observed as the Rapana venosa shell content increased. Surface Response Method and the Design Expert program (version 13.0.5.0), was utilized for the laboratory data for the CS, FS and STS of Rapana venosa shell granite replacement levels (RVS-GRL) concrete was examined at a 95% confidence interval.
