Abstract

This study investigates the granulometric analysis and trace element geochemistry of ditch cuttings from the Meji-30 well, located in the Coastal Swamp Depobelt of the Niger Delta. Sieve and geochemical analyses were carried out on fifteen (15) samples using standard sieve analysis, and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy , respectively, to characterize textural parameters, provenance, and paleoenvironmental conditions. Sieve analysis results revealed that the sediments are generally medium sand with poor sorting, indicative of deposition under high-energy tidal and shallow marine environments. Petrographic thin section studies identified feldspathic lithic arenites and lithic arkose, with a low mineralogical maturity index suggesting immature sandstones. Geochemical data revealed variable concentrations of trace elements including vanadium, chromium, lanthanum, and nickel. Bivariate and multivariate statistical approaches point to deposition under toxic to subsonic conditions with a felsic provenance. These findings have significant implications for reservoir quality assessment and petroleum system analysis in the Niger Delta.
