Evaluating the Effectiveness of Fire-Resistant Building Materials in Wildfire-Prone Residential Areas in the USA
Abstract
As a result of climate change and urban growth into areas that are prone to flames, the United States has been experiencing both an increase in the frequency and intensity of wildfires, which has led to severe losses in terms of life and property as well as infrastructure. Residential communities that are situated in the wild land-urban interface are especially susceptible to these dangers and the role that fire-resistant building materials play in reducing the amount of structural damage has become increasingly important. The use of fire-resistant materials in new residential buildings continues to be inconsistent across a variety of high-risk wildfire zones, despite the fact that it has been demonstrated that these materials lessen the likelihood of homes being destroyed by wildfires. The purpose of this study is to determine the present rate of adoption of fire-resistant building materials in regions that are prone to wildfires, evaluate the performance of these materials in minimizing structural damage during actual wildfires, and investigate the obstacles that prevent their broad adoption. The findings of this study will provide important insights that may be used to influence policymaking, inform urban design, and develop resilient communities that are better able to endure the growing threat of wildfires on the planet.
