Cultural Tourism: A Vertiable Resource for Revenue Generation in a Time of Economic Recession in Nigeria
Abstract
This article is to recognize cultural tourism as a veritable resource for revenue generation in the time of economic recession in Nigeria. Identifying culture as a major ingredient that motivates people to embark on leisure trips just to have a feel of alien cultures of other people, because, it confronts people with the reality of their shared inheritance with others that brings economic multiplier effect. But despite its importance the society seems to be ignorant of the importance of cultural tourism as a facilitator for revenue generation in the time of economic recession. The tourism which is the umbrella body of culture was identified particularly using cultural tourism as a panacea for revenue generation, which of course being acknowledged by World Tourism Organization as one of the top three constituent world trade. Nigeria today possess a potential resources base for cultural tourism to boost economic development and combat economic recession but its yet to use its full potentials like other countries were identified, as a result of certain limitations. Ways of promoting culture/tourism for economic development was explain such as promotion of local masquerades, local dishes, rich regalia festivals, arts and crafts etc. Conclusions and recommendations were made to meet up the trend of using cultural tourism as veritable resources for revenue generation in time of economic recession.
