Statecraft and Suburbanization: The Political Economy of Urban Development in London, Ontario

Abstract

This article examines the political economy of urban development in London, Ontario, using a historical-institutional framework. It finds that municipal planning is often constrained by provincial regulations, leading to a 'hybrid governance model' that combines state intervention and market reliance. Suburbanization has heightened challenges related to housing affordability and socio-spatial inequality. The study recommends enhanced state coordination and equity-centered planning.
