Assessment of Waste Management and Water Quality Impacts of Zango Abattoir, Kaduna South LGA, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examines waste production and its impact on surface and groundwater at Zango Abattoir, Kaduna. Results show the abattoir produces large quantities of bones, horns, dung, and wastewater, with disposal involving open dumping and direct discharge into River Kaduna. Several parameters, including turbidity, nitrate, TDS, COD, and E. coli, exceeded permissible limits. These findings highlight significant environmental and health risks. The study recommends improved effluent treatment and enhanced regulatory monitoring.
