Risk Factors for the Prevalence of Undiagnosed Hypertension Among Apparently Healthy Academic Staff of Tertiary Institutions in Gombe State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined risk factors for the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension among apparently healthy academic staff of tertiary institutions in Gombe state, Nigeria. Blood pressure measurement, body mass index (BMI) and socio-demographic data of 400 academic staff were obtained. Undiagnosed hypertension was detected in 25% of the participants. Prevalence was significantly associated with age, educational qualification, smoking status and body mass index. The study emphasizes the need for regular blood pressure screening and routine medical check-ups.
