Reproductive Indices and Haematological Response of Male Albino Rats (Rattus Norvegicus) to Carbon Black

Obemeata E. Oriakpono, Chizoba P. Onwuanyia, Barima G. Fihto

Abstract

Oral toxicity assessment of carbon black was carried out by daily exposing 3 groups of male albino rat excluding the control group at percentage of carbon black per 100g feed of 5%, 10% and 15% in treatments 1, 2 and 3 respectively for 30 days. Haematological parameters: Packed cell volume, Haemoglobin, Red blood cell, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, Semen analysis: Motility (quantitative), Motility (qualitative), Debris (quantitative), sperm count and morphology primordial and Hormones: Testosterone and Luteinizing Hormone were analysed. Results when compared to the control indicate that Packed cell volume increased in all treatment while Haemoglobin reduced. The results indicate that carbon black had haematoxic effects, damages the testes and impairs testosterone production in males thereby tending towards infertility.
