A Proposed Model for Improving Patient Flow Efficiency Through Interdepartmental Coordination and Digital Tracking Systems
Abstract
This proposes an integrated model for improving patient flow efficiency through strengthened interdepartmental coordination and the deployment of digital tracking systems. Fragmented communication, delayed handoffs, and limited real-time visibility are persistent challenges that affect operational performance, prolong patient wait times, and compromise overall care quality. The proposed model addresses these gaps by combining standardized coordination pathways with advanced digital solutions such as real-time location systems (RTLS), RFID/barcode tracking, and electronic flow dashboards. At its core, the model conceptualizes patient movement as a system-wide process requiring synchronized actions across emergency, diagnostic, treatment, inpatient, and discharge units. Interdepartmental coordination is achieved through shared workflows, unified performance indicators, and escalation mechanisms that reduce process variability and ensure timely transitions of care. Complementing this, digital tracking technologies enable automated time-stamping, continuous monitoring of patient progress, and predictive alerts for emerging bottlenecks. Integration with electronic health records (EHRS) allows seamless data exchange, enhancing situational awareness for clinicians, administrators, and bed managers. Additionally, embedded analytics support real-time decision-making, resource optimization, and long-term process improvement through data-driven insights. By aligning organizational practices with digital workflows, the model offers a comprehensive framework for enhancing throughput, minimizing delays, and improving operational resilience.
