Effectiveness of Audio-Visual Materials in the Teaching of Music in Junior Secondary Schools in Ondo State

Abstract

Music instruction in junior secondary schools is frequently confronted with challenges, as many students find it abstract and less attractive when taught through outdated methods. Inadequate instructional resources and overdependence on verbal explanations make it difficult for learners to fully understand musical concepts. To address this gap, this study investigated the effectiveness of audio-visual materials in the teaching and learning of Music in junior secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The population for the study comprises of one hundred and fifty (150) students who offer music from fifteen secondary schools that has music as a subject in the school curriculum were randomly selected for the study. The study adopted descriptive survey as a research design and questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The study adopted mean and standard deviation in analyzing the data obtained from the respondents. Findings showed that these instruments made learning more engaging and appealing as students performed better as against when they were taught without the use of such aids. In addition, various challenges militating against the effective use of audio-visual aids were found to be lack of teachers to handle these tools, lack of funds to purchase them as well as technical hitches.
