A Review of Outage Recovery Approaches for Enhancing Resilience in Electrical Distribution Systems
Abstract
The increasing frequency and intensity of electrical outages in modern power distribution systems highlight the urgent need for resilient recovery mechanisms. In developing nations such as Nigeria, frequent system disturbances caused by extreme weather events, equipment failures, and inadequate grid automation have exposed the limitations of conventional restoration strategies. Resilient outage recovery models aim to restore power quickly, minimize service interruption, and maintain operational continuity under uncertain conditions. This review synthesizes recent advances in outage recovery frameworks, emphasizing resilience-based optimization, distributed intelligence, and network reconfiguration strategies. The paper also discusses enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) sensing, and microgrid integration, which collectively enhance situational awareness and adaptive control. Finally, the review highlights key research challenges and proposes directions for the next generation of resilient, data-driven recovery systems suitable for emerging distribution networks.
