Gender Inequality and Domestic Violence Against Women in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria
Abstract
Gender inequality and domestic violence are pervasive issues in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, with profound implications for women's rights, health, and overall well-being. This study explores the socio-cultural, economic, and institutional factors contributing to gender inequality and domestic violence against women in Yenagoa. This study theoretically synthesized Gender and Development (GAD) theory and Cycle of Violence Theory. The study employs a descriptive (survey) research design. Findings reveal that trends of domestic violence include wife battering, husband victimizing the wife etc. Also, deep-rooted patriarchal norms, economic disempowerment, and inadequate legal protection as primary causes. Again, domestic violence causes divorce and destruction of property. Recommendations include Promote gender equality education in schools and introduce skill acquisition programs for women to reduce economic dependency.
