Evaluation of the Adsorptive Capacity of Plantain (Musa paradisiaca) Parts in the Removal of Lead (Pb) ions from Aqueous Medium

O. Abel, C. C. Obunwo, M. O. Akinfolarin

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution, particularly lead, poses a significant threat to the environment and human health. This study investigated the use of plantain plant parts (leaves, trunk, and roots) as a low-cost and effective adsorbent for removing lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated that plantain leaves exhibited the highest lead removal efficiency (80%), followed by roots (53.33%) and trunks (26.67%). The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model provided the best fit for the experimental data, suggesting monolayer adsorption. The kinetic data were best described by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption as the rate-limiting step.
