Stomach Content Analysis of Synodontis Membranaceus, around Odi Upper Nun River Bayelsa State

Abstract

The feeding habits of 276 Synodontis membranaceus from the Upper Nun River around Odi were studied for nine months. Feeding analysis indicate that the species is herbivorous-detritivorous, with plant parts (58.92%) and detritus (34.37%) dominating the diet. Stomach fullness was high (76.97% full/almost full), suggesting active foraging. The study concluded that Synodontis membranaceus efficiently exploits abundant plant matter and organic detritus in benthic habitats, which aligns with its role in nutrient cycling and energy transfer in tropical floodplain rivers.
