Implications of Insecurity Challenges on Nigeria's Foreign Policy

Abstract

The study investigated the implications of insecurity challenges on Nigeria's foreign policy. The wave of insecurity in Nigeria, orchestrated by Boko Haram, Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), and banditry, among others, poses a major challenge and threat to the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria. The period between 2011 and 2023 was marked by the persistent and brutal insurgency of Boko Haram and its offshoots, like ISWAP and armed banditry. The study adopted the Human Security Theory. The historical research design was deployed for the study. A secondary source of data was utilized. The study found that Nigeria is confronted with a myriad of security challenges, such as Boko Haram, Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) and Bandit, among others. Security challenges posed by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Bandit have negatively impacted Nigeria's economy and national security.
