Influence of Political Climate on Literary Production in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examines the influence of political climate on literary production in Nigeria, focusing on how political events, governance structures, and socio-political tensions shape literary creativity and thematic choices. The main objective is to analyze the relationship between Nigeria's political environment and the production, dissemination, and reception of literary works. Using a desk research methodology, the study reviews scholarly works, policy reports, and literary analyses from colonial to contemporary periods. Findings reveal that political regimes, censorship, and socio-political unrest significantly affect the themes, genres, and publication of literary works. Writers often respond to political crises through satire, allegory, and protest literature, reflecting society's anxieties and aspirations. The study concludes that the political climate acts both as a catalyst and constraint for literary expression. It contributes to understanding the intersection of politics, culture, and literature in Nigeria.
