Development and Evaluation of Cassava and Yam Fufu Pounding Machine
Abstract
The traditional cassava and yam pounding method is highly laborious, unhygienic and time consuming depending on the quantity to pounded[cite: 3]. [cite_start]Commercial cassava and yam fufu pounding machines with the required capabilities are available, however they are prohibitively not cost effective or user friendly, necessitating the design of improved machines[cite: 3]. [cite_start]This study designed and fabricated a radially loaded cassava and yam fufu pounding machine suitable for both domestic and industrial use[cite: 3]. [cite_start]The machine principal parts were hopper, throat, pounding compartment, discharge outlet, main frame, petrol engine, auger, shaft and bearings[cite: 3]. [cite_start]Mild steel and stainless steel sheets along with angle iron were used in the fabrication based on its availability, strength, appearance, cost, and corrosion resistance[cite: 3]. [cite_start]The machine was powered by a 6.5 hp petrol engine[cite: 3]. [cite_start]The fabricated machine was tested for performance evaluation by using it for pounding different samples of boiled cassava and yam to determine the pounding capacity and efficiency[cite: 3].
