The Assessment of Quality of Life and Life Satisfaction of Elderly Living in Old People Home

Abstract

The research investigated the quality of life and life satisfaction among the elderly in Obio-Akpor LGA, Rivers State. Cross sectional survey method was used and two standardized instruments, namely, WHO-QoL BREF and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were used to assess the quality of life and life’ satisfaction respectively. A total of l2O participants were included in the study (60 individuals from old age homes and 60 individuals residing in the home setting). Data was entered and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics on mean, standard deviation and t-test with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 25.0 version. In conclusion there exist positive significant outcome among the predictor variable and criterion variable. Hence, the overall quality of life and life satisfaction was found to be greater in the elderly residing in the home setting compared to the elderly residing at old age home. It was recommended among others that government and non-governmental agency should intervene to assist the elderly in Rumudara, Rivers State.
