Exploring the Benefits of Biophilic Design in Architectural Spaces for Drug Rehabilitation Centers

Abstract

The global drug addiction crisis necessitates therapeutic environments that support long-term recovery, yet conventional architectural approaches often fail to integrate evidence-based healing elements, particularly in climatically challenging regions. This research explored the efficacy and adaptability of Biophilic Design principles, the in-Nate human connection to nature, within the context of a tropical rehabilitation center in Rivers State, Nigeria. Utilizing a qualitative, exploratory approach, the study involved a detailed review of therapeutic architecture literature, in-depth case studies of successful global rehabilitation centers, and a site-specific biophilic checklist analysis. Principles derived from this analysis were synthesized and applied to the proposed development of the Drug Rehabilitation Center in Nonwa-Tai, a location chosen for its natural seclusion and proximity to a lush tropical forest. Key findings revealed a critical framework for therapeutic architecture in the region, emphasizing Climatic Harmony through elevated structures and deep protective eaves, and a concentric architectural layout that promotes safety, reflection, and community. This study provides context-specific evidence that adaptive biophilic interventions can transform institutional settings into restorative healing environments, offering crucial, evidence-based insights for therapeutic architecture policy and design practice in Nigeria and comparable tropical zones.
