Water to Binder Ratios Influence on the Strength Properties of Ark Clam (Anadara Granosa) Shell Incorporated Concrete
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of water to binder ratios on the strength properties of Anadara granosa shells incorporated concrete. Concrete cubes, cylinders and beams were casted, cured for 7, 14 and 28 days and were tested. Sand's fineness modulus (FM) of 3.61, uniformity curvature (UC) of 2.78 and uniformity coefficient (UC) of 4.3; the coarse aggregate's FM of 4.69, UC of 1.4 and UC of 3.33. The FM, UC and UC for AGS were 4.5, 3.33 and 3.11 with specific gravity of 2.6, 2.9 and 2.5 for sand, cement and AGS. The concrete's workability was ascertained via Slump test. The density result of 2641.98 kg/m³ shows that the concrete is a lightweight concrete. A decrease in strength as the water to binder ratio increases with the highest strength properties of the concrete been obtained with control mix and the lowest obtained at 100% AGS-GPL. At 28 days the control mix of AGS-GRL compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength with w/c ratios of 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 were 31.86 N/mm² 29.27 N/mm², 28 N/mm², 9.00 N/mm² 8.17 N/mm², 7.10 N/mm². 8.57 N/mm², 7.87 N/mm², 6.58 N/mm². However, the strength properties obtained at various AGS-GRL with varying water to binder ratios can be used for diverse construction works such.
