Designing for Navigation: A Proposal for the Ahoada History Museum

Abstract

This study rigorously examines the complex interaction between architectural design and visitor experience in history museums, with the specific aim of developing a design approach that significantly improves visitor flow and navigation. While museum architecture is conceptually recognized as a catalyst for engagement, many institutions suffer from practical navigational challenges, such as flow impediments, bottlenecks, and inadequate wayfinding cues, which demonstrably diminish visitor enjoyment and learning outcomes. Employing a modified Design-Based Research framework, the study synthesizes comprehensive secondary data, case study analysis informed by Space Syntax principles, and enhanced behavioral observation techniques to analyze visitor movement patterns and flow efficiency. Furthermore, it integrates the extracted cultural narratives and ritual logics of the Ekpeye ethnic nation, including governance structures and symbols like the Utopo platform, into spatial design requirements. The analysis confirms that minimizing navigational costs, adhering to the General Value Principle, and employing intuitive spatial configurations (such as looped or continuous linear flows) are vital for visitor satisfaction. The resultant architectural proposal for the History Museum in Ahoada, Rivers State, effectively integrates the Ekpeye cultural identity with a highly optimized layout that ensures clarity, accessibility, and efficient visitor flow, establishing a robust framework for enhancing cultural preservation and civic engagement in the region.
